How to Clean Jewelry

In this post, I will be teaching you how to clean jewelry properly. Jewelry, like most things, collects dust and dirt, which means you need to clean it often to keep it looking its best. However, since pieces of jewelry are often very small, delicate, and expensive, you need to take extra steps and precautions when cleaning your jewelry.

To clean gold, platinum, and gemstones, use a nonabrasive jewelry cleaner, which you can buy at a local jewelry store. Don’t use harsh chemicals like detergent or soaps. Here are the steps to cleaning gold, platinum, and gemstones below.

1.       Dip the jewelry in the cleaning solution

2.       Rinse the piece thoroughly under warm filtered running water

3.       Buff it dry with a soft and clean cloth like an eyeglass cloth until it’s shiny

Cleaning silver is different than cleaning gold, platinum, or gemstones. Instead of using a special jewelry cleaning solution, you need to use high quality nonabrasive silver polish. Here are the steps for cleaning silver below.

1.       Clean the silver with a nonabrasive silver polish

2.       Apply the polish with a soft cloth and gently work it into the stains

3.       Use the cloth to wipe away any extra polish, and then buff the jewelry with a soft and clean cloth until it’s shiny

4.       Remember, if you wear a piece of silver jewelry often, it can become tarnished. This means that you will have to regularly clean your jewelry.

Remember, you should never use jewelry cleaner on organic gems like pearls, or porous stones like emeralds, rubies, lapis lazuli, coral, and turquoise. To clean these types of stones, wipe them clean with a damp, soft cloth, and then have them cleaned by a professional gemologist. If you ever have any doubts when it comes to cleaning your jewelry, ALWAYS consult with a professional.
